There are many ways to approach the vast subject of ‘acceptance’. Sometimes, as my Grandmother recently said, it’s best not to accept a situation but to hold out for more. Then again, in other ways, it’s the acceptance of those things in life that we are truly blessed to be experiencing, that lead to the allowance of deep joy. When I pause to look around at all the sweet aspects of my world, a warmth spreads through my heart – holding my son’s body close to mine, watching my dog shoot across the planet as she chases a stick, feeling my partner close to me, savoring the sight of a full cupboard, a hot bowl of veggie soup at the end of winter, a warm home… These small things, when I accept how much they mean to me, equate to a life of wealth. And speaking of wealth, this month, there just seemed to be so much good news in the world media that I had to get ruthless and leave some out. We share news on one of New Zealand’s cleanest rivers and why it gets this title; yet another of our young shines out, this time with a social network she designed and developed singlehandedly; a ninety three year old first time author celebrates her new success by moving her friends out of their retirement homes and into her new country house; whales are making a come back; electric cars are all the rage and more. Enjoy the news.  And the first days of spring.

The Motueka River – A Healthy Future
There’s nothing like a swim in a deep, clear river for a mind altering experience!  The Motueka River, in the North West of the South Island, is one of New Zealand’s healthiest rivers. Andrew Fenemore,

Programme Leader of   Integrated Catchment Management for
Landcare Research NZ Ltd explained why:

“In summary, my view is that the upper Motueka is in good condition because of the happy coincidence of some geographical factors (narrow valleys with limited highly intensive land use), good relationships among resource users which have allowed development of proactive and agreed limits for water uses and some land uses.  Which is not to say it’s perfect, but at least the dialogue about protecting and benefitting from the land and water resources is ongoing, supported by the local council and by research carried out under the Motueka  ICM research programme

Wild Youth Profile:  Anjileen Daji

Seventeen year old Anjileen Daji has created her own New Zealand based social networking site www.enzed-live.com.  Happyzine paid her a cyber visit and asked her about the important issues – happiness, motivation, and dreams for the future …

What makes you happy?
Making people smile! I love helping others because it’s such a rewarding feeling to know that you’ve made a difference in someone’s life, no matter how big or small.

What or who do you consider to be special in your life?
My family and friends, and of course God for blessing me with such an awesome group of people!

What or who gets you through the hard times? How?
My faith plays a big part in it. Also the knowledge that no matter what you’re going through in life, there’s always going be someone out there who’s having a tougher time than you are. If you think about it that way you realise just how lucky you really are and learn be grateful for what you have. When I encounter obstacles in my life, I see it as a character building exercise. You get through it and it strengthens your character;  makes you appreciate life even more. Looking at it from that perspective is what gets me through the rocky roads.

What do you dream of and what steps have you taken towards your dream?
I dream of becoming an award winning author… someday. But for now I’m putting all my concentrating into my new project www.enzed-live.com, a new social networking site aiming to bring together the people of New Zealand and celebrate kiwi culture! I’ve always been interested in web design but never dreamed that I would start up something like this; it was more of a hobbie. But hey, that’s life for you! Sometimes things just happen out of the blue, and you’ve just gotta go with the flow. So I’ve been working really hard to get the word out there about Enzed Live … it’s a work in progress, but the members we have so far are really supportive and have high hopes for the site which is always good motivation!

What’s one thing you’d like to say to other youth about how to enjoy being young?
I think it’s all about making good choices. It’s important to have fun and enjoy being young, but at the same time you need to set yourselves some boundaries and not over indulge. Everything in moderation, that’s what I say!

What’s one thing you’d like to say to the world about being young?
Being young does not mean that we are inferior or that we are incapable of achieving great things. We are the future!

Mentor – Blog comment from Kevin Roberts

“It can’t have been easy for a New Zealand television reporter to get a word with Michael Phelps, the Olympic superstar, but through good luck, good management or sheer grit, she did it. Maybe it was because Phelps had a connection with New Zealand; a place in which he trained some years ago while developing his style. Her question was a good one for local audiences but Phelps’s answer gave it global resonance. “What advice would you give young people at home in New Zealand who are just starting out in the pool?” Now I watched a lot of sport on television and most athletes talk about the hard work involved and the commitment needed. All very true. However, Michael Phelps didn’t reach for train harder, faster, longer or any of the other ‘er’ words. He didn’t even hesitate. He simply looked her in the eye and said, “Dreaming”. That’s right, dreaming. He went on to say, “When I first got into the pool … I dreamt I would be at the Olympics …anything is possible”. As the world saw on television, or if you were really lucky, at poolside, the dream came true. To believe that ‘Nothing is Impossible’ and that dreams come true is one of the most valuable tools to have in both life and in business. Sure your dream has to be backed up by skill and hard work, but without that dream there is nothing to get you through tough times. And believe me, there will be tough times. Michael Phelps is an inspiration to everyone who wants to succeed at anything. Now, follow your dream and go for gold.”
