KIA ORA KOUTOU – WELCOME TO THE HAPPYZINE COMMUNITY.

Dear Charlotte,

I’ve discovered Happyzine just in time! There has been an overwhelming glut of bad news for months, which takes it toll on even a natural optimist such as myself.

Luckily I spotted your letter to the editor in an issue of Ode magazine I borrowed from the Christchurch Library this weekend. I had not read Ode before but loved the idea of a magazine for intelligent optimists.
Being an American magazine I thought the articles may have a limited relevance to life in NZ, but as soon as I saw your letter I raced to my computer and signed up for Happyzine!

Thank you! I truly appreciate what you are doing. You are helping me, and I am very sure many other people, regain a balanced outlook on life.

All best wishes to you.

kindest regards,

Colleen Arnold

Editor’s Pick:

Hey here’s something cool:  Check out Cool Kiwi.  This is New Zealand’s own free email service.  You can link to it via your other email addresses, or start a new one.  The founder – Stephen Prentice – says he wanted to create an email service that linked us to some thing we’re proud of – being a Kiwi.  I’ve just signed up.  How exciting.  This is one of those ‘why didn’t someone think of this sooner?’ ideas.  Enjoy your week, and, as ever, may the good news find you.

Good News Roundup

Kiwi sports stars former Black Cap Dion Nash and Silver Fern Bernice Mene are offering insight into sports and parenting in a breakfast which is being auctioned off to raise money for the Foundation of Youth Development which currently helps around 17, 000 young New Zealanders per year.  The charity’s latest fundraising initiative – the Non-Event of the Year – goes for six weeks.

Kai Ora – the Maori food programme where guests sing for the supper – is the only Maori television programme to be screened overseas.  Hostess Chef Anne Thorp is very proud and good for her (Manawatu Standard)!

If you live near the Coramandel and fancy a spot of strolling – get involved in the Echo Walking Festival. The Echo Walking Festival (above) is a series of 20 walks that explore the gold-mining trails and flora and fauna of the southern Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges. It runs April 18-27.

Hot air ballooning is alive and well here in Aotearoa.  The Manawatu Standard report that Nineteen year old Daisy Hall is one of the people keeping those enormous balls of hot air in the sky.

Now this story would make a great arts festival movie: China Daily reports that an eighty four year old lady rescued a five year old from a river after one of his friends pushed him in.  The pair have since become close friends

Onto positive environmental news:  How do you feel about wind farms?  Did you know a new, improved version is available?  Check out Maglev Wind Turbines – they’re reported to be the next generation in wind energy (greenideal.com).

From wind, to dirt.  Have you encountered the issue of needing dirt?  Here’s an interesting article on where to find free (or cheap) dirt (planetgreen.discovery.com).

Dirt comes in useful when growing kai.   Decorative gardens are so … nineties.  This year gardens are all about food production, and they can look great to(planetgreen.discovery.com).

Here’s something you may find easy to miss in the folliage:  yet another species of frog has been discovered and this one’s easy to miss (National geographic).

As we wind down from Earth Hour here are some great before and after photos thanks to the national Geographic

The benefits of fish oil are generally well known, and recent research has shown that it also helps to reduce methane released by animals (Science News.com)
