Concrete Mushrooms – Bunkers in Homes

Check out this story on Inhabitat.com.  This popular design website has just reported on an exciting project proposal for 750,000 abandoned Albanian concrete bunkers. The 100 page proposal, designed by two graduate students, suggests remaking the mushroom shaped dome structures into habitable eco-hostels, cafes, gifts shops and more. Not only would these plans physically change the landscape if they’re adopted, but they would completely transform their purpose, from that of alienation, to strong, sustainable community.  We’re talking spinning gold out of a pigs ear – is that how the old saying goes?
