365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation As I Raise My Son and Grow My Good News Website – Blog#7

Submitted by on April 22, 2010 – 6:23 pm 3 Comments

This is what I moved here for.

You know that saying ‘it takes a community to raise a child’?  Let me reassure you.  In bold type.  It’s true.

If anyone thought they could ace the whole parenting thing with or with out help, it was me.  I’m one of those ‘I can do anything’, ambitious, idealistic, driven people.  And at one point I thought raising a son would be … not easy … but achievable with some effort.  I mean, it’s just one more person right?  Um.  Nooooooo.  It’s every thing people say – all the most cheesy cliches, it’s the most rewarding, yet the most challenging, the most loving (and I mean a love beyond anything you will ever experience in your life) mushy, heart warming experience, yet for that very reason it’s also sometimes the most exhausting.  I would like to announce at this point that I’ve never had to raise Kahu (who is my two and a half year old son for those of you who have just tuned in) single handily.  He has the most loving, doting, adoring, wonderful father.  Kahu’s father and I are spell bound by our son.  No I’ve never had do go it completely alone, but, especially in the early days, when we were doing the traditional ‘man goes out to work, woman stays home cooks cleans and tends to child’ thing, the nuclear family was just not enough.  Kahu required a tribe.  And now we have returned to one.  Golden Bay has a web of networks that support families.  I’ve been here for just one week and already I have five people lined up to help me with my gorgeous son.  I know my needs – at least one hour a day just for me.  I don’t want too much time away from him, he’s just too yummy, I’d miss him.  But an hour – that’s perfect.  So today, friends came and the children took to the sandpit.  With the dog.  They were immersed in the world of construction, digging and filling while we relaxed and gossiped merrily.  Ahhh … community liv’n.

Today’s rating 9/10.

PS Tonight I made rice pasta with a delicious sauce: fresh tomato, basil, thyme, rosemary, onion and garlic sauce.  Some organic sea salt, some freshly ground pepper, a little oil sprinkled through the pasta.  Mmmm … bellissimo!

PPS I’ve been blogging for a week! :-)
