365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#61 – Organic Aotearoa
I was recently reminded of my opinion that I think New Zealand should become 100 % organic. I remembered when I was looking around on http://intersect.ning.com/ and I came accross a comment, well, more a question that asked ‘ what ever happened to the GE Free movement?’. I’m not sure of the answer to this question. Do you know? But it did remind me of an essay I wrote, about a decade ago, in the third year of my social policy degree. I argued that the West Coast of the South Island should become totally organic. That was around the time that Helen Clark had just come into power and had stopped all native forest logging on the west coast and I think the government had given the West Coast a compensation package – was it one million? Anyway, I thought it would be a great opportunity to go organic. Funny isn’t it, the reasons people can think of to not go organic. My then professor came up with screeds of reasons, from an economic perspective, of why my idea was strange and unrealistic.
There will always be dozens of reasons for and against any idea, it really comes down to the question of what kind of future we want for our children. If we’re coming from an ecomonic perspective, it might be worth asking ourselves whether we’ll have the foundations for a strong economy without a healthy environment. Can we divorce one from the other? Or are they deeply interconnected?
Yes, I know that saying I want Aotearoa to become 100% organic is a totally simple, optimistic, perhaps even naive statement. But I don’t care. How else will things come into fruition if we don’t bandy these ideas about?

I am with you on that one Sista!
There was a day long ago that we were all organic, except it just wasnt called that, it was just normal, the way we were before the introduction of all these nasty chemicals. Nowadays, everybody wants too much, too quickly and its all about money. Shame the majority dont realise the impact that has on the world as a whole. The whole being what it should be about, we are in fact all connected, as one and if we worked together on this one, we would all be better off, people, the planet and the future for our children. Even the big businessmen could turn it around if they dared to, so I encourage everybody to jump aboard and stand up proudly for this.
Personally, I only buy organic as I believe so strongly about it. It might mean I have to go without a lot of other things as unfortunately whilst in the minority, it does cost more (but this too we can change collectively)but I believe I am worth it and so is the planet. And with this, I trust that the Universe will in turn look after me. Besides, I prefer to invest in the planet on a daily basis than have a bigger bank balance. All the riches of this world are here right in front of me every day in this beautiful Bay.
