365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#83 – Roof Top Gardens in Auckland Gradually Becoming Reality – Anyone Want One???

DreamtoReality logo - by Dave Kingan http://kereruculture.wordpress.com/

This morning I stepped out of the dark ages and into the world of Skype (oh Skype, how I love thee! I had no idea just how easy to understand and free you were!)  I talked to Emily Harris – our DreamtoReality super-star – about her progress.  It was a relief to finally talk with Emily.  We’ve been attempting to communicate via email for the past few months as she doesn’t do the phone thing.  It was morning (just) so the fact that both of us were in our dressing gowns was totally acceptable.  For those who don’t know about our DreamtoReality project, all the way back in March we ran a competition for people to who wanted ten month’s worth of life-coach support (from the great Christchurch based Clem McGrath) to help them reach their green dream in one year.  We received three amazing entries – here’s the whole DreamtoReality section – and Emily received the most votes for her efforts.  She’s on a mission to establish roof top gardens in the Auckland CBD and she’s well on her way.  I’m very proud of her.  I know that at times she’s felt a little over-whelmed by that good old ‘so much to do in such a short time’ feeling, but she’s managed to reign it all in and find a good pace – I think that was partly due to Clem’s support.

Now, for anyone out there living in Auckland who dreams of growing fresh, yummy food on their roof-top – on any scale – Emily’s the girl to talk to.  She’s been learning all about the ins and outs of making food happen on an inner-city roof and it’s been a steep learning curve for her.  She’s going organic too.  Just think of the benefits: fresh, free kai, a beautiful roof that you want to sun-bath in naked (and maybe you will), you’d be keeping up with the international grow your own food trend, your roof-top would look cool, your friends would like you more and want to hang out on your roof.  Here’s her email address: [email protected]. Email her right now.  Go on!  Go on!  Don’t be shy!  Have you emailed her yet?

Anyway, back to my less forceful tone now …  You felt compelled to email her didn’t you? Even if you don’t live in Auckland?  Or have a spare, flat, accessible roof-top? …  Emily’s well on track to having one whole roof-top up and pumping out food by December.  She’s got her roof lined up, she’s gathering all the necessary stuff such as plant boxes and plants, she’s even got a logo; and she’s about to host her first community building meeting with all the people who enthusiastically offered their support for the project.

All in all I feel like a proud God-Mother.  Not quite a parent, no, because I only just talked to her face to face and Clem’s been more fatherly than I’ve been motherly.

Ok signing off now

Oh hold on!  One more thing.  Yesterday I announced that I would report in on my two week mission to complete my e-book. Today I put an agonizing two hours in as dug around for the snippets of information for the e-book that I’d left on my old, cast aside, decrepit computer, and pulled a two week wall=plan together, whilst fending off my toddler son who felt that it was his right to draw snakes on the huge piece of paper I was writing on.  Oh and I sent my business coach a summary of the e-book too, would you like to see it? Ok, here it is:

“Founder and Editor of New Zealand’s positive news website www.happyzine.co.nz Charlotte Squire says by using our natural talents, thinking positively and having fun, every single one of us can make a profound difference to the world-wide environmental movement.  In fact, she say’s that optimism and excitement will lead to faster and more effective environmental change world-wide.

1.  Learn about ten positive thinking techniques you can use to create an exciting environmental future

2.  Check out the stories of ten people, who live all over the planet, and are successfully using these techniques right now, with amazing results

3.  Learn now you can use these techniques to fuel you along in your mission to do good for the planet, and inspire those around you to make a difference too!

That’s right!  It’s time to have fun while we save the planet!”

Yes, progress happened today.
