SOLD: Beautiful Happyzine

So today, I want to share this gorgeous tale from Rebecca Reider as a taster for my up-coming e-book, because it’s beautiful and authentic and surprising.  Rebecca wrote the book Dreaming the Biosphere, and is a poet who raps her heart out for the planet.  She’s also written for Happyzine, has a Masters in Environmental Science from Yale and is a  a published academic author.

I invited her …. um, actually that’s too gentle a way to put it, I e-stalked her until she answered some questions for the e-book I’m currently writing.  Here’s one question and answer from Rebecca.

Do you have any thoughts on the importance of maintaining life balance as an environmentalist, and how do you personally keep the balance between your personal life and your work?

“It’s critical!!!! For my paid work, I sometimes spend a lot of time on the computer doing admin for various organic growers’ organisations. Even though I know intellectually that it’s all for a good cause, it’s quite easy to feel disconnected and drained when spending the bulk of one’s working hours with a phone on my ear or a screen in my face. And organic people can be quite challenging to deal with at times as we are all passionate and opinionated! Fortunately I work from home and live in a magical place by the ocean.

Last year I was the adoptive mother of two calves, and in between stints at the computer I would go outside and hang out with them — ok I would cuddle them when they let me; and when they were lying down chewing their cud under the oak tree (which is when they exude the cow-equivalent of purring) was my favourite time; I would wriggle up til I was sitting next to them and totally earth out.

This may sound ridiculous to anyone who hasn’t lived with cows but they are extraordinarily calming, grounding animals when they have a good life — “I’m chewing my cud; all is well in the world.” I imagine that if everyone could connect with an animal or a tree or simply the earth beneath us more frequently, we would all have more strength, peace, and groundedness to bring to our challenging work in these challenging times.”

I love it!
