Tonight, we’re taking a dance back through time … to the eighties.

“We are strong!  No one can tell us we’re wrong!”

That’s what I was like in the eighties.  Back then when I hadn’t yet discovered ‘self-help’ or ‘self-employment’ or ‘self responsibility’ … or cellulite or cells phones or flares (the revival) or realised that you had to pay to own a dog.  Back then it was ok to eat a whole loaf of white-bread for breakfast, and to sleep with my skateboard.

Those were the days of sitting at my Dad’s knee watching black and white TV one and two (the only channels we got), sliding down hills on cardboard, lusting after fifty cent bags of lollies and excavating the earth around old tree stumps in the hope of finding ancient coins.

“We’re on the road to nowhere!”

I traveled in an old Morris Minor, or backwards down hill on my rollarskates, or forwards downhill on my skateboard.  The flashest place I ever ate was Cobb ‘n Co.  My Mum said dieting was her favorite hobby and chewed a lot of gum.  My Dad was on a DIY mission.

Tina Turner was screaming about stuff I didn’t get, but danced to anyway.  I kept stubbing the same big toe.  I teased my hair and got into rainbow headbands.  I wore braces, even though my pants were tight.

I wore the power of my parent’s love on my face.  My brother followed me around devotedly.  I went through my fair share of pineapple lumps and lemonade popsicles.    I knew all the words to Greases ‘You’re the One That I Want’ (the revival).  Both male and female parts.  Ok, I knew the male parts better.

I sang my fair share of earnest songs.  I buried several time capsules, then dug them up again.  I had a crush on the same boy for three years before winning his heart in standard four and basking in it for one whole year.  Some days we held hands.  I hid my home-made lunches from the cool kids.  My version of meditating was sun-bathing.

365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation (as I raise my gorgeous son and grow my good news website to a subscription base of 100,000 people).  The Low Down on this Blog.
