365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#156 – Wild Energy

Submitted by on September 24, 2010 – 8:13 pm

Introducing the new Wild Energy facebook group.  This is a brand new page, so there’s not much going on there yet.  But still, I’d like to invite you to join our way cool group.  This is the beginning of the launch phase of the long awaited Happyzine Wild Energy sustainable energy design competition.  Here’s the brief:

Meridian Energy propose to develop a hydro generation scheme on the Mokihinui River. This would involve the construction of a dam, and the consequent flooding of part of the valley, and the disruption of many species of wildlife in the area.

We believe that there are other ways of generating or saving the energy that the proposed scheme would produce, and this competition has been designed to spark the nation’s creativity, and showcase the best ideas. We are challenging participants to come up with designs that could, if scaled up, or replicated many times over, generate at least fifty percent of the energy that the proposed Mokihinui Dam could create.

Happyzine has partnered up with the New Zealand Wild Rivers campaign – who will help us reach their membership base of over 100,000 people – to promote the Wild Energy competition to inventors, designers, students, inventors and creators nationwide. The Wild Rivers campaign represents Fish and Game, Federated Mountain Clubs, Forest & Bird, Whitewater NZ, the Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations of NZ, the NZ Rafting Association, the New Zealand Federation of Freshwater Anglers and the Environment and Conservation Organisations of NZ.

Our judges panel includes: Jeanette Fitzsimons (who has recently retired from her long held position as co-Leader of the NZ Green Party), Tim Wigmore (a Wellington based designer), Steve Goldthorpe (a Waiapu based energy analyst) Chris Heaslip (an Invercargille based engineer) and Geoff Henderson (CEO of Windflow Technology Ltd and recognised global wind energy expert.

Our panel of NZ Politicians who will choose and comment upon their favorite three designs are: National MP Nicky Wagner, Labour MP Charles Chauvel and Green Party MP Kevin Hague.

You heard it here first!  So join our group, our brand new group today if you’re a facebooker.  And if you’re a designer (there are many ways to define this term) or you know someone with these talents – spread the word about Wild Energy.  The competition launch date is: 18th October, 2010.  It will run through till the end of January 2011.
