365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#164 – One Easy Way to Chillax Your Mind and Evoke the Good Feelings

Submitted by on October 2, 2010 – 9:28 pm

So today I chillaxed and read a juicy novel.  It was classic chick lit – written from the women’s perspective, involving a breakup, new love, and chocolate.  Ahhh perfect.  They all fade into one really, those chick lit books, but are perfect and serve their function just the same.  My friend once described reading as ‘lazy meditation’ and I agree. After my father died five years back, one of the only things that would calm my mind was the act of retreating to my bed with a novel and reading the whole thing.  For me, the great thing about reading is that I’m focused on something else other than my own (often) reacuring thoughts for a while.  It’s like taking a wee holiday.  And the other cool thing is that I always feel that the authors are with me, sort of holding my hand for a little while, as I read their words.  And you can be sure that their books took a fair bit of work and editing before they were published, so it’s sort as if you’re getting the very best out of that author – you know what I mean? You’re reading the very best work they could produce at that time.

I get very effected by what ever I’m reading, so if they express more than one chapter of sadness, or depression or anything else that doesn’t feel that good, I have to exit the story.  Bottom line I’m reading it to feel better, to relax and enjoy myself, so there’s no time for sadness.  If I relaxed my rules around this issue I’d just take it all on.  Honestly, I am so sensitive.  Hence this good news website! If the movie’s scary, I’m a pillow hider, or I’m out of there.  If it’s violent, I have to get up and leave as I feel the atmosphere of movie too easily.  But if it’s an uplifting one or a triumphant one, fabbo!  Most important thing in a movie for me?  Happy ending!  If it aint got that, waste of time in my opinion.

So, I’m happy to report I’ve got a good pile of girly books at the ready.  Not that I officially have time to read them right now.
