365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog 244 – Christmas Blessings to You, You and You

Submitted by on December 25, 2010 – 11:58 pm 2 Comments

Where ever you are on this Christmas Day of 2010 I would like to send you a warm hug and a huge smile. You matter to me.  That might sound kind of cheesy, but you really do matter to me.  I appreciate that you’re reading my blog.  I’m writing it with the hope that it might brighten up your day.  And there’s more than enough kindness in this world for all of us.

I got lucky today.  I scored big time.  I got to spend Christmas afternoon and evening with my family.   I know I was fortunate because I got to spend today feeling safe and happy.  I thoroughly enjoyed the entire, hilarious, entertaining, familiar, heart-warming family gathering.  From the passionate consumption of chocolate biscuits to the exchange of gifts.  From the chaotic buffet style dinner to the haphazard and heaving berry chocolate pavlovas that ended spilling off the plates and across the table.  From the screaming children piling joyously upon one laughing, helpless Grandmother to the pet rabbit obsessed golden dog.  It was all sweet.  It was all familiar.  It was quirky.  It was kind. It was all immensely precious to me.

Christmas 2010 Way Cool Person of the Day Award

And one person I noticed today was my mother.  My mother who pottered away quietly in the background cooking, cleaning and serving up the food.  My mother is a shy, introverted, polite person who grew up during the fifties and still adheres to the belief that you always leave the house wearing lipstick and you should wear good, tidy shoes.  She doesn’t like to draw attention to herself.  Yet she lights up with the brightest smile when she first sees one of us.  She was a gentle mother – who was only staunch about one thing: honouring our personalities.  While Mum isn’t the chatty one, or the charismatic one, these days now that our father has been gone (died unexpectedly) for five years, she’s the grounded one.  She’s the sensible one, the person who takes care of the practical, the small, domestic details and she’s still the champion of all children’s spirits.  She’ll always step up to give the little people the benefit of the doubt, believing devotedly in their goodness.

So I realised today, that if she wasn’t there, if her steady presence was missing, I would really feel it.  I would really, really miss her.  If her kind, warm presence was missing, she would leave a huge gap.  It’s a strange feeling for me noticing that the quiet person in my family who has always been happy to work away in the background with very little expectation of much in return, is immensely important.  But she is.  To be honest, I grew up taking my mother for granted.  She gave so much for us, that I didn’t know any other way.  Now that I’m a mother, I’m beginning to get it.  I’m glad I realised before it was too late.

So did I tell her how I felt  tonight?  Absolutely.  Did she like hearing it? Yes she did.  She smiled and I could see that my comment had reached her heart.

People matter so very, very much.  What an amazing day.

Awww, I like how you describe your Mom. There’s truly no doubt that she’s special and you love her so much. My Mom isn’t also the best in the world, but despite all our arguments, I still love her. I’m wishing you all the best in life. Take care!

Thanks Cecile! Lovely to hear from you and to re-read this blog that I wrote late at night one sleepy evening after Christmas Day. Nice to know someone read it and ‘got it’. Mum’s are so important. I think they can bring out our best and worst, and hopefully still love us through it.
