Call for Entries – Designs Inspired by ‘Intelligent Mobility’ (and Featuring Environmental Sensitivity)

Annual global design challenge seeks submissions that consider the future of home appliances

Electrolux Design Lab 2011 invites Kiwi industrial design students and recent graduates of industrial design to compete for a six-month paid global internship and cash prizes by submitting ideas that consider intelligent mobility.

The incentive for New Zealand students to enter has been enhanced in 2011, with Electrolux New Zealand extending a $1,000 cash prize to entrants that achieve a place in the global top eight of the Electrolux Design Lab competition.

“Now in its ninth year, Electrolux Design Lab allows young designers to test themselves and gain valuable insight in to the world of commercial product design,” says Electrolux New Zealand General Manager Malcolm Bain. “This is a fantastic opportunity for young Kiwi designers to showcase their talents.”

The competition seeks solutions that address how people prepare food, clean and do dishes both within and beyond the home given, as a society, we have become more mobile and our activities more dispersed.

“The 2011 brief seeks design concepts that will inspire users whilst utilising existing technology to offer support and guidance,” says SVP of Global Design at Electrolux Otto Henrik.  “This challenge is not just about making appliances that are physically more portable, rather it is about providing flexible control to liberate time and support creative expression both within and beyond the home.”

Entrants should also consider the heritage of Electrolux. Submissions should reflect the brand’s Scandinavian design values by being sensitive to the environment, providing intuitive ease of use and aesthetic appeal.

Entries will be judged later this year by global judging panels.  The global top eight will be invited to present their individual concept to a panel of expert designers at a finals event in Europe. The judges will consider all entries based on intuitive design, innovation and consumer insight when awarding the global competition winners.

The global competition’s first prize is a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre and 5,000 Euros (over $9,400 NZD). The global competition also rewards a second prize of 3,000 Euros and a third prize of 2,000 Euros.

Deadline for entry is Sunday, 1st May 2011.  New Zealand design students are required to enter online via the Electrolux Design Lab website: www.electrolux.com/designlab.  Further details can be found on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNIu5WCnuBA
