Art Beat Brings Excitement To Re:START

Art Beat

Media Release

5 November 2012

Want to swap your fears for your very own hand silk screened poster? What about releasing some of that frustration about the EQC claims process in return for a unique and hand crafted document designed by four artist employees of ‘The Loss Adjusters’? Or maybe you just want to listen to some live local music whilst watching the amazing process of graffiti art production. Art Beat will offer it all to Christchurch locals and visitors this summer.

This Friday sees the start of Art Beat, a four-month long multi-arts programme in Re:START, Cashel Mall, Christchurch. See local musical acts play alongside a series of engaging art projects, including world-class graffiti art works by Nick ‘IKARUS’ Tam and Wongi ‘FREAK’ Wilson as well as the construction of a mural by local Fine Arts student Rachael Dewhurst.

Bringing further excitement and energy to Re:START after the shopping precinct’s one year anniversary last week, Art Beat will give Christchurch locals yet another reason to visit the city centre.

The Art Beat initiative is a collaborative business/arts venture between Re:START and Arts Voice Christchurch which will also provide performance opportunities, exposure and work experience for established and developing Christchurch-based artists.

Arts Voice Christchurch is an independent art advocacy group set up to make sure the arts become an essential part of the new city.

Deborah McCormick, Arts Voice Christchurch Member and Art Beat Facilitator says, ”Art Beat has been developed over the last 5 months as an arts lead response to bring a quality, fun and an accessible arts programme to the heart of the city this summer. Local artists will bring a new energy and vitality to Re:START showing us how art can and will be a major part of the city as it develops alongside property development, retail and hospitality.”

Art Beat is grateful for the funding and support received from Creative New Zealand, Christchurch City Council, Heart Strings, Re:START, Wilson Parking and Hereford Holdings Ltd.

This is great! The re-starting of Chch to re-create their city with active community involvement is inspiring. I move there in 2013 and am looking forward to perhaps being involved in this growth, re-growth and expression :)
