Sculptures transform Auckland’s Silo Park this Summer

Exquisite bronze castings, beautiful carvings and cutting-edge polymer sculptures will descend upon Auckland’s waterfront on 1 February to 14 March 2013, as Wynyard Quarter proudly plays host to the contemporary public sculpture installation, ‘Summer of Sculpture.’

This free six-week outdoor exhibition held at the popular Silo Park will feature 22 critically-acclaimed Auckland Sculptors and their most prestigious and recognisable works. The event is designed to celebrate the diverse talent and creativity of New Zealand art and sculpture, with the ‘best of the best’ on display for the public to enjoy.

Driven by the Outdoor Sculpture 2001 Incorporated Society, ‘Summer of Sculpture’ is an artist-initiated project in association with Heart of the City, Waterfront Auckland, the Wallace Arts Trust and the Chartwell Trust.

The Society co-chairman, Richard Mathieson says, ‘Summer of Sculpture’ offers the public a fantastic opportunity to engage and learn more about some of the best sculptors in Auckland, through their stunning sculptures around Silo Park.

“The sculptors taking part have created works of art that all consider the unique landscaping and features of Wynyard Quarter including the gantry, lamp posts and both the grassed and paved areas. The Silo Tanks will house moving image and multi-media installations, including internationally-regarded sound & inter-media artist Phil Dadson, and will draw heavily on New Zealand and Pacific themes,” adds Mathieson.

‘Summer of Sculpture’ offers a taste of the many sculpture events happening around the Auckland City this summer including Waiheke’s Sculpture on the Gulf and the International Sculpture Symposium at the Auckland City Art Gallery. The ‘Summer of Sculpture’ exhibition will artfully complement these first-class events and attract sculpture enthusiasts to Auckland as an art and sculpture destination.

Make sure you block out your calendar next month and make a trip to Silo Park to see our incredible local artistic talent and their works, ‘Summer of Sculpture’ will be an event you won’t want to miss. Head to biglittlecity.co.nz/Events/summer-sculpture for more details.
