Conscious Consumers
MEDIA RELEASE – EMBARGOED UNTIL MONDAY 28 JANUARY.

– START –

A smartphone app to change the world!

Conscious Consumers has today released a smartphone application that puts power into the pockets of hospitality consumers.

New Zealand’s first ethics-based accreditation programme for the hospitality sector, Conscious Consumers has developed the app to inform and empower consumers to support businesses that match their values.

‘Our programme gives consumers the power to show their support for businesses that align with their values. We’re really excited to release the app which is a great tool for consumers, and also a platform for businesses to promote their ethical credentials,’ says Ben Gleisner, National Director of Conscious Consumers.

Providing an accreditation and consumer marketing platform, the programme celebrates and maximises the positive impact of ethical and sustainable businesses practices like recycling and composting waste, and using free range and fair trade products.

‘We have some great businesses in New Zealand that are committed to environmentally and socially responsible practices. Now we’ve got the technology for consumers to easily find these businesses and make their support visible,’ says Mr Gleisner.

Current ambassadors of the programme include the award-winning Pegasus Bay Winery Restaurant.

‘We have always been big advocates of ethical and sustainable business at Pegasus Bay Winery and Restaurant. So it was a delight to both learn about and become affiliated with Conscious Consumers. It is fantastic to become connected nationwide with like-minded people and businesses,’ says Belinda Donald, Pegasus Bay Winery.

Kick-started by Wellington based charity 42collective in 2010 as a volunteer-run organisation, Conscious Consumers is supported by the Ministry for the Environment, the Hikurangi Foundation and councils in Wellington, Auckland and Waikato.

‘This is just the beginning. The need for ethical and sustainable business and consumption practices is global – and urgent. We have big plans for Conscious Consumers and are stoked to have to the support to launch from New Zealand.’ says Mr Gleisner.
