Waitakere locals go ‘Up the Creek’ at film premiere

It was a popcorn and laughter-filled Friday night at the movies as actors and Waitakere locals ‘walked the red carpet’ for a special film premiere April 19th in Oratia.

Robbers and tortoises both feature in the new short film Up the Creek – a stream restoration comedy produced by Community Waitakere staff member Simon Grant, on behalf of Project Twin Streams. Grant aims to enthuse audiences with a film that is educational but out of the ordinary – describing it as “not what a textbook will teach you about stream restoration work and community planting.”

The film stars local theatrical characters Max Peers and Andrew Geddes, Project Twin Streams staff, Wai Care water monitoring staff; as well as many community groups such as the West Auckland Historical Society, Henderson Primary School, Flanshaw Road School, and ACG Sunderland Primary.

Many of the locals at the premiere are involved with Project Twin Streams as volunteers, collecting rubbish, weeding, plant trees, monitoring stream health and other important tasks. “This film premiere shows how motivated and engaged our local community is about caring for our streams” explains Chris Burton, Community Environmental Team Leader at Community Waitakere.

Up the Creek will have further public screenings such as at the Oratia Film Club on the 26th of April, Oratia Settlers Hall at 8pm (see http://settlersfilmclub.weebly.com) , and screenings in local schools in Term 2.

Up the Creek spins a tale that is fun and informative for audiences of all ages. The film is 30 minutes long with additional interviews covering cultural practices, community plantings, stream restoration and the making of the film.
