The country’s largest three day celebration of Maori culture, held every second year in Auckland, will take place at the Cloud and Shed 10 on the Auckland waterfront September 6 to 8th 2013 and will build on the huge successes of the three previous ATAMIRA Maori in the City festivals, which each attracted over 100,000 people.

Watch our Maori master carvers, weavers and ta moko artists at work and try your hand working with ancient tools and materials. Enjoy vibrant Maori music by popular and emerging artists, kapahaka performances and contemporary Maori artwork. Shop from authentic Maori art and craft stalls, take in food demonstrations and sample traditional and contemporary food from the food stalls.

Join us in celebrating the best of Maori creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.

image_atamiraThe Atamira is a Maori device for presenting, demonstrating and displaying significant and important things. This is especially so for things worthy of respect and admiration.

The traditional Atamira concept has survived into modern times in the form of the cake singing custom performed and Northland Maori weddings. This custom illuminates the importance of presenting and maintaining cultural identity and the significance given to caring hospitably for guests and visitors.

The concept of Atamira for this kaupapa – ATAMIRA Maori in the City – is a metaphor for stages of performances and platforms to celebrate being Maori and living in Tamaki.
