How to beat the back to work blues

Even for those of us that are lucky enough to love our jobs, most of us drag the chain a bit when it comes to heading back to work after the holiday period. It’s natural to feel this way, especially if you’ve been on holiday and experienced the freedom of setting your own schedule for a week or two without the demands of work interrupting your leisure time.

Work can suddenly conjure up feelings of entrapment and loss of freedom and subsequently resentment.

Sometimes this can be reality, at other times it can be all about perception, attitude and the stories that we tell ourselves. Through our perceptions we create our reality. Stepping back and taking a helicopter view of our current working situation can work wonders for managing the “back to work” transition.

If your struggling to get back into the swing of things, making some time to simply consider what it is that’s currently working for you in your job can be a simple step toward taking back some control, the first step to changing any situation is identifying the facts removing as much of the emotion as you possibly can. Acknowledge what works for you and what doesn’t in your current role, this can be useful in restoring a sense of meaning and purpose to your work. Identifying what’s not working gives you the opportunity to explore what you can do to change those things.

If things really aren’t working for you in your current role and you’d like to move towards a change in job but the timing isn’t quite right why not use your current environment as practice for the skills and attitudes that you may need in order to transition to a new role.

Treat every challenge as a learning and growth opportunity. Be proactive, work up a timeline and exit strategy, this can make all the difference when handing in your resignation at the end of the week is not a practical solution. You can survive anything when you know it’s temporary. It’s all about making your current situation work for you as best you can.

And lastly it pays to remember that you are in charge of your life and attitudes and you have the power to change them. Before you get out of bed in the morning take 30 seconds to decide what attitude you want to take with you to work that day and notice the difference it makes to your working day.
