New exhibition bursting, flipping and wobbling its way to ArtBox

Burster Flipper Wobbler Dripper Spinner Stacker Shaker Maker — eight energetic words that perfectly sum up a new fun- and family-focused art exhibition coming to Christchurch’s ArtBox, with a grand opening this Saturday, 15 February.
Christchurch Art Gallery Deputy Director Blair Jackson says the exhibition will offer a vivid sense of artists as makers — asking questions, taking risks and exploring the possibilities of their materials.
“That crazy title really does sum up what the exhibition is all about — the shape-shifting, experimental and seriously playful work of making art,” he says. “This is very much one for children and families to make the most of.”
Burster Flipper Wobbler Dripper Spinner Stacker Shaker Maker sees artists from New Zealand and Australia test the limits of their materials, with morphing pencil sculptures, stretchy paint skins, gravity-defying stacks and videos of exploding paint-balloons.
Featuring works by Rebecca Baumann, Mark Braunias and Jill Kennedy, Judy Darragh, Steve Carr, Lionel Bawden, John Hurrell, Tony Bond, Helen Calder, John Nicholson and Miranda Parkes, the exhibition is supported by a lively and engaging programme for both children and adults that includes floor talks, workshops and publications.
The exhibition opens to musical and colourful fanfare this Saturday,* from 10am to 3pm, with a family-friendly event featuring performances by Kitchen Collective Ensemble, School of Rock, and magician Josh Grimaldi. The young and the young-at-heart can also enjoy the Imagination Playground, art-making activities, face painting, refreshments and fun give-aways.
“We’re particularly pleased to once again offer something special for children and families,” says Mr Jackson. ”We hope they’ll be as enthralled and inspired by seeing ordinary things transformed in unexpected ways as we are.”
Burster Flipper Wobbler Dripper Spinner Stacker Shaker Maker will be at ArtBox, corner of Madras and St Asaph streets, Christchurch, from 15 February* to 28 September. Entry is free of charge.
ArtBox is open 10am–5pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am–4pm, Saturday and Sunday.
*In the event of rain, the opening of the exhibition will be postponed until Sunday, 16 February.
