Lucy Lawless back in action to save the Arctic

Submitted by on May 20, 2014 – 3:41 pm

lucyGreenpeace is involved in creating a Global Sanctuary in the Arctic, and Lucy Lawless is back in action working on the cause.  Here’s the latest from Greenpeace and how you can be involved:

Over 5 million have joined the call for a Global Sanctuary in the Arctic because it’s under threat from oil drilling, and because it’s one of the most fragile and important areas on the planet.

Together we’ve taken the message to the governments of the Arctic states and to the United Nations. We’ve taken direct action on land and sea to confront the problem.

And we kicked it all off here in New Zealand back in 2012 when Lucy Lawless joined 6 others in an occupation of Shell’s Arctic bound drillship in Taranaki. Their stand lasted 4 days, began with just seven people boarding the ship but ended with over 100,000 people joining them in a call to Save the Arctic. What they did in Taranaki sparked a movement that is now over 5 million strong.

And it’s really starting to work.

Recently the European parliament voiced their support for an Arctic Sanctuary, and Finland – a key Arctic state – has adopted the idea.

But we’re not there yet and so I’m asking for your help again … we have a crazy idea.

To ban oil drilling and destructive industrial fishing there for good, and create an Arctic Sanctuary, we have to keep building momentum. One really good way to do that is to gain the support of LOTS of influential people from all over the world … and that’s where you come in.

New Zealand is a small country and everyone knows everyone right! Or at least everyone knows someone who knows someone. Between us we should be able to do better than just about any other country. We should easily be able to sign up a whole bunch of politicians (from all parties), a good selection of scientists, professors, doctors, academics, and community leaders.

Opinion leaders, business leaders, artists, actors and sports icons – we’ll be spoilt for choice! Is there an opinion influencer in your family, amongst your personal connections and networks, or perhaps a friend of a friend? I bet there is if you take a moment to think about it.

Ask them to sign the Arctic Declaration. If there’s no such person in your circle of contacts, don’t worry – you can use our detailed toolkit to approach influencers with confidence.

We played a crucial role in kick-starting this movement. Now we’ve got the chance to show the world what we can do again.

P.S. Oh and Lucy Lawless is back in action helping out again with a youtube video called Lucy Gets Bare … you have to see it (and share it).
