Pallet gardens thrive and free veggie workshops in Aotea Square

Last December the Urban Pantry team an awesome time planting the pallet gardens at Aotea Square with the public. They say the vegetables have been growing well and the gardens have “attracted a heap of interest from people wanting to grow edibles on balconies and in other small spaces.”

The gardens will be in Aotea Square until February 20th.

Free garden workshops at Aotea Square

Urban Pantry have teamed up with experts to offer free weekend gardening workshops at the Aotea Square veggie gardens throughout the summer.

Harvesting Rainwater for your Garden with Laurie Dee from Rainworks
Saturday 16 Jan, 2pm
Learn how to set up a home rainwater harvesting system to catch the rainwater that falls on your roof to use in your garden. Save money on your summer water bills while keeping your garden thriving.

Composting, Worm Farms and Bokashi with Richard Lee from Compost Collective
Saturday 23 Jan, 2pm and Sunday 7 Feb, 2pm
An introduction to the three basic composting systems that can be used in the home and garden: traditional composting bins, worm farms and Bokashi buckets. The courses are proudly supported by Auckland Council and delivered by the Compost Collective.

Setting up an Organic Edible Garden with Kings Plant Barn
Sunday 31 Jan, 2pm
Find out how to get set up for successfully growing your own organic vegetables with a garden expert from Kings Plant Barn. Learn what it takes to create healthy soil as the foundation for a productive vegetable garden.

Growing Fruit Trees in the City with Kings Plant Barn
Sunday 14 Feb, 2pm
A Kings Plant Barn garden expert will share top tips for growing fruit trees in Auckland. Find out which varieties you can grow in small urban gardens, how to care for them, how and when to prune, and how you can get the most fruit out of limited space.

Friday 19 Feb, time TBC (follow us on Facebook for updates)
Bid farewell to the vegetable gardens and celebrate the harvest. A chef will transform the harvest from the vegetable garden into delicious snacks for you to try, and maybe even share some recipe suggestions.
