Editor’s Pick:
What’s good in New Zealand at the moment?  My pick is Waitangi Day.  Celebrated world wide, I’ve seen plenty of highlights worth reiterating in the media since Friday.  Maori Party Co-Leader Tariana Turia shared some seriously inspiring words about the future of New Zealand as a “strong and unified nation”.  She said: “I am optimistic that we are moving to a time when all New Zealanders will live up to the Treaty promise of a respectful and honourable partnership”.  There was a record turn-out at Waitangi this year; and I loved seeing the London Kiwi’s doing the Haka with a fervour.

Good News Roundup
Setting the scene for another entertaining year of politics – Prime Minister John Key proved he could shake his booty with the best of them at the“Big Gay Out”.

On the environmental front Auckland City’s air quality is steadily improving. Also, British greeny David Belamy is revisiting the Whirinaki Forest Park to celebrate the quarter century since conservationists won the right to protect it’s native trees.  If you’re up for some expert gardening instruction, check out award winning Sol Morgan’s weekly advice, he’s talking ‘summer salad’.  Ever heard of Tiritiri Matangi Island? This once, rat infested island, is now teaming with rare species in an environment that is described as close “as possible to what a coastal forest would have housed before humans arrived”.  WWF are tapping into the unlimited creativity of the human mind, for the planet. They’re holding a competition calling for new designs of fishing devices that reduce the accidental by catch of some species.  Finally, seventy five countried have signed onto the International Renewable Energy Agency – a global organisation designed to spread clean energy accross the globe.
Onto sports – whether you’re a rugby fan or not, most enjoy dressing up and grinning at each other, as is shown in these photos of last week’s Rugby Sevens .  And the charismatic Olympic Gold Medalist Valerie Vili has taken the supreme prize at the Halberg Awards as well as being voted Sportswoman of the Year.  This year has also featured screeds of gloom via the media on the economic front, but according to recently research, in New Zealand most feel unaffected .
