KIA ORA KOUTOU – WELCOME TO THE HAPPYZINE COMMUNITY.

Editor’s Pick:

Sharing‘ was the theme in a recent blog by Kiwi CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi – Kevin Roberts.   He says that sharing is the way of the future, pointing to internet-sharing systems such as Facebook, eBay and others that can lead to strong communities and a sense of belonging.    Late summer in Aotearoa is a great time to share the bountiful harvests of a sun-kissed season of growing, with each other, and I love walking up my street and noticing wild apples and plums overhead – what a lush country!

Good News Roundup

Food is always a worthy subject, and this week we have plenty of good news to share about it.  Are you an Oyster fan?  Bluff oysters are in season and research so far shows they’re healthy and abundant.  How about Maori potatoes?  Check out this couple who collect them, they say they’re the most versatile vegetable and have even been recently exhibiting them.  Rounding off this tribute to great kai, check out New Zealand’s new champion cheese maker at the National Cheese Awards

Do you have a passion for quilting?  Check out Melior’s blog.  It takes hand-craft to a whole new plane.

WOMAD is almost upon us (13th to the 15th March).  The band Dengue Fever, reputed to be the ‘Jackson’s of Cambodia’ are coming to New Zealand for Womad this year, The LA Times suggested “if you can imagine a band where a Cambodian beauty queen shares the stage with Rasputin, Barry White, Allen Ginsberg, Michael Hutchence and Brian Wilson” that’s Dengue Fever – check them out.  This is the 2009 Womad line up

Thanks to bird lovers and DoC, New Zealand’s smallest bird now has a new island home in the Hauraki Gulf.  Also briefly making an island their home, after five weeks presumed missing, three fishmen from Kiribati have been found alive on an island in Papua New Guinea, much to the joy of their families.

Check out this great blog: Reasons to be Hopeful, it was sent in by a Happyzine reader and is a positive news blog about the economy!

Mindless doodling not only feels relaxing but has another purpose:  doodling can help memory recall.   In England, a retired farmer has other ways of relaxing – he’s spent over thiry years building a model of Herod’s temple .

From one side of the planet to another – Turkey wants to help out with the Fiji Flood fund, so they’re donating US $50,000 to the Government’s Disaster Rehabilitation Fund.

On the environmental front – Wellington is New Zealand’s cleanest and greenest, with recycling, pollution, quality of life and open space being taken into consideration.  Aphids to the rescue!  Did you know that Aphids can help plants to heal themselves?

Great news about the precious youth of our planet: here’s a story of a young man with a passion for sustainable, innovative home design.  He’s building amazing homes for the homeless, out of rubbish.

A similar theme is happening in South Carolina.  University students and staff are getting clever with large shipping containers and turning them into livable, sustainable dwellings.

The grownups of America are making a positive difference too.  The American Institute of Architects are walking-their-talk in offering a great new online guide for greening-up buildings.  This counts as steps towards their goals to halve fossil fuel usage by 2010 and become carbon nuetral by 2030.
One species who are experiencing some positive change in their home environment is the Canada Lynx catThis previously endangered animal is currently making a come-back because its habitat has expanded nearly twenty-fold under a Fish and Wildlife Service decision.

Information Week Magazine

has decided to get-greener by only publishing online.  It promises to plant a tree per download for the first 5000 downloads of each issue.  While we’re talking ‘tree’ – new research proves something many of us already knew:  Living near trees makes people feel good.  It also helps to reduce crime.

Yet another species are reclaiming their mojo:  In the UK, Cranes, which were hunted to extinction four centuries ago are being reintroduced in Gloucestershire.

Finally – Ankara, Turkey has an inspiring waste reduction project underway.  They’ve installed two 10,000 tonne composting tanks in their city.  The green manure will be used around the city, meanwhile gas emitted by rubbish will be used to provide the city’s power.
