KIA ORA KOUTOU – WELCOME TO THE HAPPYZINE COMMUNITY.

Editor’s Pick:

Earth Hour 2009 was quite a thrill for me (one reason being that as a Mummy I got to do it at home with my wee boy).  It certainly is a great  example of positive environmental action.  It seemed that anything was achievable this year – from the Eiffel Tower to the Sky Tower – it all went off.  Check out these before and after photos of the Empire State Building.  It just goes to show what’s possible when people get excited about something
– absolutely ANYTHING.

Good News Roundup

Good news from the Maori world: The first te reo curriculum has been launched for teaching the Maori language to college and intermediate students in New Zealand has been launched (NZ Government).

Dogs in schools?  This idea has a lot going for it. In Christchurch six dogs have been welcomed into South New Brighton school’s family in an effort to ‘calm and enrich’ the school environment (press.co.nz).

Citizens of Sunny Westport will be pleased that their fine town has finally made it onto the weather map (press.co.nz).

Seven year old Anna Leat of Arrowtown must be smiling too.  As a karate student, she’s taken on some of Japan’s top students.  While she didn’t win against them all, she’s keen and determined to keep training (odt.co.nz).

Down the road in Alexandra is another story of dedication.  Thanks to life time donors such as Roly Letham, the New Zealand Blood Service continues to operate (odt.co.nz) .
And now onto a favourite topic of Happyzine:  LOVE.  Patience and perseverence have been key ingredients for this Oamaru couple who have enjoyed sixty five happy years together. Awwww (odt.co.nz).

What about the love of music?  Sciencenow.org report evidence suggests hat the same music feels good no matter where you live

Check out this opinion piece by a reporter who, having over-dosed on depressing news has embraced positive media like a long lost cousin (newsweek.com)

And now for news of the earth:  Good news from The Warehouse.  It says it will take 20 million plastic bags out of circulation in a year.

A Christchurch couple reduced their waste down to one rubbish bag from a whole year’s rubbish, and celebrated with a packaging-free keg!

John Lennon seems to have grown up with a great garden, check out optimistworld.com’s account of a scientific study that has been done on the subject!

There must be plenty of worms in John’s childhood garden, and speaking of worms, check out this facinating UK earthworm study that has been designed as part of a “nationwide initiative to inspire communities to discover, enjoy and protect their local environment”

Yet more species have been discovered: Fifty new animal species have been discovered in Papua New Guinea (NZ Herald.co.nz)
