MEDIA RELEASE
One of the highlights of Te Papa’s 18-day Matariki Festival will be shared with a national and international audience.
Eight senior Māori performing arts groups from around the North Island are gathering this weekend at Te Papa to entertain and share their cultural knowledge with a live audience at Te Papa and a virtual audience around the world.
Through the power and capability of TelstraClear’s Next IP network, the weekend’s performances will be webcast live online at www.tepapa.govt.nz/kapahaka on Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July 2009.
Aucklanders can also view the webcast on a big screen inside the meeting house at Orakei marae at Bastion Point, thanks to New Zealand Post.
Te Papa Events Producer Mere Boynton says she’s thrilled that New Zealand Post and the organisers of the Matariki Festival in Auckland seized on the opportunity to share the webcast with another public audience.
‘It’s great to see such initiative and to know that Kaumātua Kapa Haka will be enjoyed by people in Auckland at the same time as we will be watching Kaumātua Kapa Haka in Wellington’ says Mere.
Mere also expects people from around the world to view the webcast. ‘The word has been spread out to New Zealanders overseas, particularly those living in Australia and England. It’s a fitting finale to this year’s Te Papa celebrations. Our theme for 2009 is whakawhanaungatanga which is all about bringing people together.’
To view the webcast and the programme for Kaumātua Kapa Haka go online to www.tepapa.govt.nz/kapahaka
Kaumātua Kapa Haka is proudly supported by TelstraClear and New Zealand Post.
