Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori – Maori Language Week
August 2nd, 2009
All across Aotearoa people have been focussing positively upon Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori over the past week. Room Five of Muritai School have created a fantastic blog page in honour of this special week – it’s packed full of great resources for those who are interested in te ao Maori (the Maori world) or the language. You can check it out here.
Even the New Zealand Defence Force have thrown their weight in behind this cause, encouraging all personnel to use Maori place names and greetings throughout this week. Check out the article here.
If you enjoy some Maori waiata (songs) you can listen to a few classic Maori hits here via the NZ Beats website. They dedicated a whole show to Maori language week.
Here’s a website that’s totally dedicated to Te Wiki O Te Reo, it’s got all sorts of great resources on it, including ‘100 Maori Words All New Zealanders Should Know’.
Each year Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori raises the profile and usage of the Maori language and the call is growing stronger throughout the country for Maori language week to be extended to the rest of the year. Thanks to the efforts of many around the country, this is one dream that may one day become a reality.
