rata4We have a lot to learn from our youth. From Stuff – Down in Southland, youth are leading the way by getting into sustainable transport – using a travel card, where they get a stamp for the option they have chosen: walking, biking or car pooling. Good idea and I love the idea of a ‘cycle train’ – parent’s at the front and back.

Haven’t our crimson flowering trees, the rata and potutakawa, been magnificant this year. And next year it will be even better with news from The Peoples Times that, “Regional council Environment Waikato and the Project Crimson Trust are partnering up for the project which will see the 1000 pohutukawa distributed to Coromandel landowners next winter.” Let’s plant trees – lots and lots of trees – good on you Project Crimson.

On a slightly quirky note, from Optimists World, it is good to see people working together for a common cause. ” The residents of an Arab-Israeli village near Jerusalem who have launched a bid to make the world’s largest hummus dish.” This attempt is bringing people together and I would be very pleased to try some of their glorious hummus.

It is always amazing when they find new species. It really brings home the truth that there is much mystery in the world. From Mongabay.com – A new bird, the Spectacled Fowerpecker – and isn’t that a wonderful name – has been found in The Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah, Malaysia.

Great news from NewsScotland.com about white-tailed eagles on Mull rearing ten chicks in last year’s breeding season. “The island has ten pairs of the eagles, once extinct in Scotland. Known as “flying barn doors” because of their size.” Bringing birds back from extinction is good work. Thank you for saving these magnificent birds.
