Christchurch Council Seeks Young Leaders
The Christchurch City Council is looking for fourteen young people from diverse backgrounds to develop into the next generation of leaders.
The Council supports a scholarship enabling these potential leaders to take part in a funded Outward Bound course that will give them confidence in their leadership abilities, build their emotional intelligence, and give them the essential skills for achieving ambitious goals.
The Outward Bound-funded adventure-based leadership training programme is worth almost $50,000 in total. The Council supports the scholarship as a way of progressing its vision for a city of inclusive and diverse communities
This year, the 2010 course runs from late July to mid August. Each participant has their Outward Bound registration fully paid for and only need to find the three weeks required to complete the course.
The acting unit manager of the Council’s Community Support Unit, Michael Flatman, says the scholarship plays an important part in assisting the city’s next generation of leaders.
“This programme provides an adventurous way of challenging self-imposed limitations, and it enables us to take young people out of their familiar environments and put them where their diverse backgrounds become their source of strength, both as individuals and for the team.”
“It gives them confidence in themselves and an awareness of how others see the world, and is designed to put them on a path where a deep understanding of themselves and others is critical for success.”
Mr Flatman says it is important to the Council to have people who fully appreciate diversity and inclusion as the local community becomes more diverse.
The Otautahi Southern Cross Outward Bound Course scholarship programme is in partnership with the Council, the Human Rights Commission and Outward Bound.
The closing date for applications is March 26. More information can be found at:
