The Passionate Nomad – Heather Hapeta
1. Tell me about this travel writing workshop you’re presenting …
It’s a week on an Fijian island where people who want to learn or improve their writing – whether they write travel for the printed media, or blog or plan on writing a book about travel. Some people could use the workshop to create a good setting, or background for a novel or short story. Travel writing is different in that the style has to change according to the audience and publication – participants will see how they could use the same story or destination for different publications,
2. How did you come to be invited to give it?
Seems they found my writing on line and obviously liked it as I got an email invitation: quite an honour as they have not had a kiwi presenter before as all the others are Australians
3. What’s your life motto?
Live in the now: value every day.
4. If you could do one thing, for a whole year, what would it be?
Travel, travel, travel! There is so much world to see and people to meet
5. Who inspires you and why?
The people who inspire me are people who have overcome problems
6. What are three pieces of advice you’d give anyone wanting to become a travel writer?
Travel alone, travel slowly, meet locals, and get lost – it’s the places around the corner you didn’t know about that provide the best stories ( whoops that’s four!)
7. What kind of social and physical environments can people expect to experience in Fiji?
As I haven’t been before, I recommend people checking out the links on my website to see more about Daku resort – but think kava ceremony, sun, sand and fresh tropical fruit for breakfast!.
8. What are you particularly looking forward to during this workshop?
Seeing new places (I haven’t been to Fiji) through other peoples eyes.
9. What’s one special thing that you’ll share with writers that other workshop presenters may not offer?
My happy, joyous, and free approach to life and travel … I’m not ‘precious’ about my knowledge
10. What’s the best thing about living life as a ‘passionate nomad’?
It means when I die, and if its true life passes before my eyes, I’ll be thinking … ‘what a great time I have had, and what fabulous places and people I have seen and met!
