365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation As I Raise My Son and Grow My Good News Website – Blog#2
Tonight I attended the must-do of Golden Bay culture – a pot luck at my friend Fi’s house.
It was a small affair, unlike some of the humungous pot-lucks I’ve attended here where dozens of people materialise from the hidden pockets of the Bay with all manner of interesting dishes. Gluten, wheat and sugar free often feature – and somehow manage to taste yummy. I’ve seen some amazing herb salads made with plants that many of us (including myself) would trample over with no thought for their taste or goodness. Mind you, I’ve also tucked into a damn good chocolate moose – made with the works: mega chocolate, egg and crème. Anyway, back to the key topic, there were only officially two adults and two children (with four other grown-ups and two more kiddie-winks popping in) at tonight’s dinner. And actually, it was more of a combined meal – together we contributed ingredients to a beef caserole, with meat from our
friend Ali’s home-grown steer.
Food. It’s a topic of keen interest for me. Since yesterday I’ve discovered where to source the free-range eggs (five different road-side stalls), who to buy organic or wild meat from, and where to get the cheapest spray-free veggies. This place has an abundace of road-side food stalls. I love them and I love knowing where to find them (whose going to make the google map?). They’re a great way to source cheap, usually organic or spray free, fresh, locally-made produce and they’re dotted about everywhere in this fine bay. More about them soon.
Back, once more, to tonight: I enjoyed the people. As they came and went from Fi’s generally busy abode I relaxed and without even realising it, filled up with the pleasure of being amongst a group of humans. I enjoyed watching my son play with the other kids. I enjoyed being jumped up and down on by a one year old. I enjoyed lying in front of a good old fashioned roaring fire with my soon attempting to watch a soon to be abandoned DVD. To my surprise I left feeling sleepily sated.
Tonight’s rating 7/10.
