Tai Chi: Smoothing out the Bumps

Submitted by on May 9, 2010 – 11:11 am

What are the benefits of moving smoothly?

The Tai Chi classics say that smooth movement equals an even movement, meaning neither too much nor too little.  If you move according to these written guidelines, you’re physically balanced, which then helps your mind find balance.

In the body, smooth movement comes from the joints.  When your joints work smoothly, then you are able to practise precise control of your movements.

For the muscles, smooth movement occurs when they work together.  Muscles work in pairs, one contracts whilst the other relaxes.   If they don’t work together, then your movements jerk.  Smooth movement requires muscle harmony.

Smooth movement does not necessarily mean slow movement. When in action, smooth movements can be fast because they are extremely efficient.  Your muscles are coordinated.  Just ask any sportsperson about the speed advantages of smooth, fluid movement.

Your body, and mind, will thank you if you move smoothly.
