365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#80 – Imagine If All Your Cardboard Packaging Came Impregnated With Seeds?
Imagine if every-time someone bought a new computer, they could plant the packaging in their backyards, and it would sprout native trees? This concept’s been labelled Life Box (TM – just imagine this is a little, raised up high ‘TM’ would you?) and it’s taken off in the States. Al Gore’s even supported the idea and will ship all copies of his new book in them. So far, around 4,716,164 tree seeds have been placed into Life Boxes. The idea has been approved by the Department of Agriculture, so the seeds in the packaging can be planted in every state of the United States and Canada (with the exception of Hawaii).
I just saw this covered in inhabit.com, check out more information here. Ok, it’s time for another ‘imagine if’ moment – just think how cool this could be here in Aotearoa. It’s sort of like a more processed version of a seed bomb. Of course, you’d have to actually take the time to bury or mulch the cardboard, there’s always this factor. But it certainly does increase the chances of more trees being planted.
Interesting quote from inhabitat.com:
“If you do the math it is quite impressive what one could achieve with this clever box: a 1-2% share of the cardboard box market in the United States could cover up to 25,000 acres of land per week! Of the hundreds of tree seeds in each box, if only one survives for 30 years, approximately one ton of carbon will be sequestered.”
Apart from finding the grammar of that quote slightly irksome, it’s a pretty inspiring piece of info. Where would we plant them here? Aside from in our own backyards, perhaps we could also plant them in parks, schools, areas of farmland, beside rivers, around hospitals … theoretically these very boxes could end up coming here. It would be good to have a kiwi version.
