Positive Writing Course Helps People to Save the Planet One Word at a Time.

Submitted by on July 26, 2010 – 8:55 pm

Ever wondered how you can use your natural talent for writing to save the planet? A New Zealand based Editor is offering an online Positive Writing Course which is designed to teach people how to use the power of their written word to inspire social and environmental change.

Charlotte Squire is the Editor of the good-news website www.happyzine.co.nz. She says that every day people approach her with inquiries about writing for Happyzine, including reporters from larger newspapers who are tired of focusing on the negative spin, as they have a genuine craving to tell stories about the good things in life that happen every day.

Says Squire –

“Whether you realise it or not, the media with which we feed our minds, have the power to shape our lives. Those news items we invest our time and emotions in, will lead us to expect the best or the worst from life.

“When you watch the evening news, and the leading news item is about a car crash or an environmental catastrophe, how does that make you feel? Inspired or overwhelmed? Actually, good news is happening everywhere, in every moment of everyday. And the more we tell these stories, the more other people will feel inspired to do good too.

“In sales, research has shown that optimistic people achieve better results. They reach higher, because they believe they can achieve great results, or at least they dare to hope that they can. Imagine if we applied this optimism to environmental causes.

“Positive thinking isn’t just some new age fad, it’s not simply an indulgence, it’s totally necessary if we are serious about re-shaping our future as a species on this planet. A thriving society is built upon a healthy planet, you can’t have one without the other.”

Squire says positive writers have no shortage of material to work with.

“Each of us has a role to play in creating the developing sustainable generation, where everything – jobs, industry, fashion, building, education – is geared towards smart, wise use of resources. I want to help the writers branch out and dare to write about the amazing green projects that are happening everywhere and about the projects that people are planning, whether it’s via their own personal blogs, or through some of the more inspiring media platforms that are emerging world-wide. The more you read about sustainable design and organics and recycling and innovation, the more you believe is possible; and the more people who discover these projects, the more likely they are to get involved and help make them happen. That’s why positive media is a must.”

As a positive writer herself for the past decade, Squire says she’s had hundreds of stories published within both “mainstream” and more consciously positive media. She said that the very fact that she found it so challenging to find markets for her more optimistically framed pieces originally inspired her to establish www.happyzine.co.nz three years ago.

The Positive Writing Course will cover: how to write positive articles, how to write blogs that people actually read (and share with their friends), how to find paying and non-paying markets for inspiring writing, and how to source or take great images to accompany stories.

Squire says people can live anywhere, as long as they have access to broadband. The course entails a one hour lecture which will be posted online each Sunday (New Zealand time), discussion and networking with fellow students, and a one hour one-on-one chat with her.

The course starts this Sunday the 1st of August and will continue each Sunday through the rest of the month. Check out https://happyzine.co.nz/2010/07/05/positive-writing-course/ for more details.
