Maori Art and Design wins Nga Kupu Ora Maori Book Awards
‘‘Maori Art and Design: Weaving, Painting, Carving and Architecture’ by Julie Paama-Pengelly, has been selected as the winner of the Art, Architecture and Design Award at the Nga Kupu Ora Maori Book Awards 2010.
The book’s editor, Christine Thomson, comments, ‘New Holland Publishers is delighted that our publication ‘Maori Art and Design’ has been honoured with this award and we wish to congratulate Julie Paama-Pengelly on a significant achievement with her first book.’
Organised by Massey University, the awards are designed to honour excellence in Maori publishing. Kaihautu Maori (Maori library services manager) Spencer Lilley says the awards came about after other major book awards consistently failed to recognize Maori publications.
Twelve books published between June last year and May 30 this year were finalists in the second annual awards, three from each of the following categories art, architecture and design; biography; history; and te reo Maori. The winners were selected by online public votes, tying in with Maori Language Week.
Winners will be celebrated at a ceremony to be held at the Manawatu campus on Maori Language Day, September 14.
