365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#116 – The Sub-Tropical Hideaway I Love to Raid for Organic Delicacies
I’m gong to share my little not-so-secret Golden Bay secret with you today – it’s the Rocksworld organic veggie stall. To find it you first have to find The Grove. Now The Grove is another story, another delightful, mystical, magical, ancient story concerning limestone rocks, very old trees and the highly probable presence of fairies. So you Aucklanders , or Wellingtonians or Cantabrians, when you’re on your Golden Bay holiday, first find the Grove and then you’ll know you’re only a kilometre away from the organic Rocksworld produce stall.
Yes, it’s another road-side stall, only it’s not literally on the side of the road, it’s down a curving driveway, which is lined with lush flowers and fruit trees. The stall itself is a shimmering mass of edible, luscious wonder such as avocados, tamarillos, lemons, mandarins, lettuces, fresh herbs, garlic and onions, jams and chutneys, pumpkins, kumara, brussel sprouts, and more. There’s always an abundance of produce to be found there no matter what the season, for example today, late-winter, that stall was packed with fresh, vibrant fruits and veg.
What I love about this veggie stall is that the owners appear to take it very seriously, it’s always lovingly stocked with perfectly fresh produce. The lettuce always stands pert and crisp in its jar. The organic fruit is deep and rich in colour and tastes like fruit should taste.
As you’re sitting there in your car, scrambling for change, everywhere you look food is being grown. Alongside enormous glass-houses, lemon trees droop fruit; avocado and tamarillo trees tower huge and busy behind the stall. The family could surely live off their land.
I love buying a huge chunk of pumpkin, a capsicum and some coriander to take home and make my yummy pumpkin soup. The food there is so reasonably priced that those ingredients would only cost around five dollars at the most.
So now I’ve got a lovely assortment of live foods sitting on my kitchen bench, awaiting preparation. I like leaving it there for a while, to admire!
