365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#137 – The Good to be Found After the Christchurch Quake

Submitted by on September 4, 2010 – 10:31 pm

I woke up to something knocking on my window last night.  Too sleepy to remember to be afraid, my mind drowsily  tried to come up with a small handful of reasons for the knocking.  The vague surprise that I couldn’t come up with a single reason, woke me enough to realise that we were experiencing an earthquake.  I automatically moved closer to my son, who was fast asleep, and hoped I wouldn’t have to grab him and get under a door-frame (does that advice still stand?), but  it was only a gentle quake for us.  And I knew that the earth around our home wasn’t in the mood to carry on, don’t ask me how, I just knew.  I also sleepily wondered if it was the ripple effect of a larger quake somewhere else.

This morning I heard that the quake was centred down in Christchurch and it was around seven and a half in magnitude, and around thirty km’s deep.  What a shock!  I heard that the city I’d only moved away from a year or so ago was in a state of chaos.

I want to send my love to all the Cantabrians who have just come through day-one after (apparently) the biggest quake to hit Aotearoa since the Napier quake.  I hope that you’re all safe, warm and dry somewhere, with people you love.  And I hope that this will bring some of you closer together, and that you’ll discover unexpected good, or reasons to do more good, in the midst of this seemingly crazy, surreal situation.  These unexpected events can often bring out the best in people.  And I’m so glad that everybody appears to have come through alive. Though I’m a true ‘Top of the Souther’ one thing that really struck me about Christchurch back when I lived there was the true generosity and kindness of people.  I trust that kind acts are happening big time right now in Canterbury at this time when people, many without power or water, are at their most in need.  I’m sure some beautiful stories of bravery and giving will come out of this.

Kia kaha, kia maia.  All my love to the people of Canterbury.
