365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#140 – God I Love it When Communication Feels Good
Over the past few days I’ve experienced a range of communication situations. Some have been absolutely horrible and upsetting, where I felt powerless and insignificant, and others, my friends have been pure delight. Those moments have been as sweet and warm as manuka honey.
I have been reminded that it’s always, always best to be honest and kind and to come from the simple truth of my heart, rather than to run from my fear of being honest in a way that might not feel good for someone else. I have learned that if I believe strongly enough in my right to safe, honest, real communication, eventually the world will shift its way into agreance with me. I have remembered that it’s good to stand up for myself, or as my awesome relationship counselor keeps reminding me ‘to assert myself’. And I have remembered that sometimes, just the gentle act of telling someone how I feel, can sort everything out. I have also learned that I have much, much more to learn, about wise, effective communication.
It’s such a rich subject isn’t it? I’ve just been working on the chapter of my e-book about communication. Everyone has a different approach to it, and everyone is right in a different way, and yet do I dare to offer the assumption that each of us simply have the need to feel heard, understood and safe? Well yes, I just did. This subject is vast and underpins our relationships, including with ourselves. At the ripe age of thirty four, I suspect that I will always be developing my communication skills so that a) I feel heard, understood and good and b) so do the people I’m in dialogue with. Having said all this, sometimes the best thing to do is laugh and laugh and laugh.
