365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#158 – The Equinox HANDS Market – How This Complementary Currency Can Feed the Family
I’ve just spent a glorious morning at the HANDS market mingling with my people. Or my ‘peeps’ as some would say. We were crammed in to the Kotinga Hall, a humble little community hall up located up a dirt road that only locals would know about. Yep, we were squashed, sardine style into a throng of eager trade. HANDS style.
I was HANDS rich after running some Positive Writing courses and so went on an eager spending spree. I was keen to know what sort of stuff I could buy that would support my family’s day to day existence. Food being the most obvious. And I was pleasantly surprised. Would you like to know what I bought? Well … OK, seeing I can hear you insisting …
1 Wooden lunch box – very funky, highly recommended for every child, might sell them on Happyzine
2 small bottles of essential oils (the good stuff) – cinnamon and lavender – was very excited to purchase these using HANDS
3 jars of good old fashioned home made chutney – tamarillo, tomato and kiwi fruit – these would usually cost around ten dollars in shops
1 bottle of tomato sauce – we go through heaps of tomato sauce, my son loves it
1 punnet of cows feta – will be good for pizza
5 gluten free shortbread cookies – which my son took a shine to, and is also good because I have gluten free family coming to stay tonight
1 CD – the musician who made this album got it printed and then never sold it, so today his wife was on a ‘buy my husband’s album’ rampage – I have yet to listen to it, though it came with great reviews from random passer-byers and also it only cost three HANDS (one HAND is roughly equivalent to one Kiwi dollar)
1 bag of lush mandarins – always very useful for lunches
1 bracelet – made of crystals that are said to be sleep promoting, useful for me at the moment
1 hat – a styli woolen one with a cap
24 eggs – gotta buy up big when they’re free range and they’re five HANDS per dozen. Funny moment that accompanied the purchase of these eggs: the owner checked out the dates on each box and said ‘oh that batch aren’t vegetarian, that was the day a mouse got in there and one of them ate it whole’. It was kinda funny at the time.
4 pieces of coconut ice – which sent all who ate it flying up into the distant stratosphere due to sugar highs
Yep. I walked in there empty handed and left with two huge, bulging bags and one over-it child. Ahhh, it was just gorgeous. I must say I’m getting used to it now, but it took a little adjusting after the relative anonymity of Nelson. Being in the old Kotinga Hall, when it’s packed full of people I know, was a lot for the senses to handle. But my son’s adjusting to it and so am I. It felt like being at a party! And I was drunk on my instant social life.
