SOLD: Beautiful Happyzine

Gardening.  For me it’s never been a very attractive way to spend my time.  Well maybe theoretically, but not in actual reality, not too much of it anyway.  It rates up there (or should I say down there) with fishing for me.  I am aware that many do adore gardening and fishing  (including my brother who is obsessed with both), and I’m very grateful to these people especially when they proudly present me with the fruits of their loving labour, it’s just that I’m more  a talker, and a mover.  I usually prefer to chat with people (something I don’t equate with gardening or fishing), and I thrive on a good run or dance (or Zumba class nervous laugh).  As I have previously said I prefer to support the efforts of those who love to grow food  by buying it and eating it in a highly appreciative manner.  Today though, as I rose to the challenge of making huge progress with the oft’ mentioned ebook, outside beckoned.  Yes outside sparkled invitingly and alluringly in its sexy new spring way and I found myself taking breaks from my computer work to pull weeds and prepare the beds for new seedlings.

It was so relaxing.

When I’m working on projects that require total focus I have this nice wee habit I learned from my son’s father – I like to work and achieve a little goal, perhaps take myself one definite step closer to my goal, and then take a break.  I especially  like to do this when I’m working on the computer – which believe it or not I can only spend so much time nearby.  The trick is to remain focused on one or two goals and develop temporary tunnel vision (not that easy for a Mum), but when I do, by jingoes I make great progress!

And so it was that today my sweetest moments were pulling out the winter’s weeds and marveling at the glorious peaty earth that I’m lucky enough to be caretaking during my time in this house I’m renting.  My friends trucked in luscious, rich compost for all the gardens of this house and it grows amazing food.  I loved sitting there, bare armed and showing my son which plants where officially ‘weeds’ and which I wanted to keep (just as my Grandmother had once shown me).  I loved feeling the heat beating down on my back as I carefully picked around baby daisy bushes and inhaled freshly moved, thriving soil.  It felt like utter freedom being out there doing something so simple and made such a beautiful contrast to all the computer work I’ve been immersed in.

Can you feel spring around you Kiwis? I can.  It’s beautiful.  Doors are opening everywhere.
