365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog 198 – Skater Girl

Submitted by on November 6, 2010 – 8:50 pm

When I was around ten, I was a skateboarder.  I owned a plastic ‘Superskate’.  It was my most valued possession, I loved it so much I slept beside it.  And carried it around like lady carries a handbag.  So today, when I saw an eleven year old girl on the quarter pipe skate ramp (not a half-pipe as she told me) work’n it like a pro on her mountain bike my inner ten year old was immensely impressed and in awe.   What I most admired about her was the way she fearlessly, effortlessly swept up and over the lip of the pipe.  You can only get up the top by committing.  If you loose the faith half-way up, you’re in for a pretty nasty fall.  But this didn’t appear to occur to her.  She said she was a skater too.  Wow.  My awe increased.

Now, it doesn’t matter how many nights I lay adoring my skateboard, it wouldn’t have boosted me up and over that pipe.  You see, I just don’t think I would have had the tenacity to get up over that lip without some serious practice, and perhaps coaching from someone else.  It would have taken me a leap in confidence to even contemplate being able to do it.  If I had of done it though, I would have felt like Super-girl (I loved that movie).

So our friend the biker/skater stopped to chat and turned out to be a humble, friendly, comfortable in her skin sort of girl freshly moved up from Hokitika (West Coast, New Zealand).  In other words she was a country kid.  Hence the friendliness.  She wasn’t at all arrogant about her skills, or showing off.  To her they were no big deal.

To me though, they were a reminder of what we can achieve, with a little practice, and a few inspired ideas.  They were a reminder to me of what I could have achieved a while back, with a little tenacity.   And a reminder of what I can do now that I’m happy to believe in myself.

So what’s your ‘skateboard ramp’?
