SOLD: Beautiful Happyzine

Over the past week I’ve been spending a little quality time with Celestine Hitiura Vaite – a Tahitian writer.  I always believe that when you read a novel you’re getting the very best of an author and as I read Celestine’s delightful three books I felt truly blessed to be in her company.  The main character of this series is ‘Materena Mahi’ – a warm, loving, kind, wise Tahitian Mama.  Through the books ‘Frangipani – The mother whose daughter amazed her and everything that happened next’, ‘Breadfruit’ and ‘Tiare – The husband who didn’t deserve his wife and everything that happened next’ – we learn of Materena’s journey from falling in love with her man Pito, falling pregnant, having three children, loving them furiously and believing in them no matter what, to becoming a Grandmother and the surprises that this experience brings.

What I loved most about this series was the motherly factor.  You get a nice tasty often humerous look into the the wisdom that was handed down from mother to child, mother to child (and a few cousins along the way).  Here’s a quick snippet from the first book – this is some of the Tahitian wisdom that made these books so sweet to read.  It’s Materena’s advice to her daughter after she ‘became a woman’:

“When you visit somebody, stop five metres away from the house and call out.  Don’t walk into the house in case that somebody is doing something you don’t want to see or something you don’t need to see.  Call but don’t call like somebody died, call with a normal voice.  If nobody answers your call after the third call it means nobody’s home or maybe the relative you want to see doesn’t want to see you.

To get rid of unwanted guests without hurting their feelings, broom around their feet.

Don’t eat in front of people if you can’t share …

Show respect to old people.

Don’t get married before you have at least one child with your man.  Children are the hardest part in a couple’s life.  When there are no children, everything is easy, every body wants to get married.  Once there are children, everything changes.”

These seem like useful pearls of wisdom for a girl to learn.  And highly applicable here in New Zealand.  Check this author out for a relaxed, warm, happy read.
