365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog 224 – Honey – The Old Ways Remain

Submitted by on December 5, 2010 – 9:54 pm

It was a quarter to eight in the morning (in fact this very morning) and I was driving, bleary eyed, into a petrol station with a sleeping child and a car-full of provisions.  We’d already been awake for five hours thanks to the ever changing sleeping patterns of my son and a cough that had hit him hard over the past few days.  I filled up the car, then popped the hood, with the voice of my father ringing through my mind: “have you checked the oil and water?”

To my relief a fore court attendant strolled out to offer a hand.  She was freshly showered, very present, her freshness a welcome contrast to my exhaustion.  She took over.

“Thanks,” I said, stepping back.  We got to talking and it turned out that she was the mother of three.

“Got any good tips for coughs?” I asked her expecting to hear about her preferred brand of cough medicine.

“Just lemon and honey,” she said.

And so that was how our honey chat began.

“My mum used to use it on patient’s bed sores, when they’d let her at the hospital,” I said.

“I’m surprised they ever let her,” she snorted, “doctors have said to me ‘I suggest honey, but don’t tell anyone’.  There’s not enough money in it I suppose … ”

We topped up the oil.

“I keep one jar for sores and cuts and one for using on toast,” she said.

“That is very cool to hear,” I replied, hoping, for the thousandth time, that our precious honey bees would pull through and remained a strong, thriving species.  I also marveled that that I was having such a random conversation with a stranger on a forecourt and then I remembered something that someone had said, just a few days ago:

“Just go out amongst people, out into life, and stuff will happen, it has to happen.  Out there, it’s where the magic happens.”

He was right.
