365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog 238 – Today I Bought All My Christmas Presents And I Didn’t Spend One Kiwi Dollar

Submitted by on December 19, 2010 – 9:16 pm

I thought I’d take a leap of faith this year and hold out until a week before Christmas to buy everyone in my family their Christmas pressies from the HANDS market.  Did I succeed in my quest? Absolutely.  Did it take some hard-core shopping.  Oh yes.  I must have circled the Pohara Hall twenty times hunting out the right gift for each person whilst gazing repeatedly down at my scribbled list.  But after three hours the mission was accomplished.  While I can’t really say what I bought (for obvious reasons) I can say that everything I bought was new, some was hand made, most was made in Golden Bay to be sold around the country, and it felt damn good to spend those HANDS!

It’s a totally different feeling trading in this currency – there’s far less pressure as the HANDS can’t used to pay mortgages, or utility bills (yet) so you just have to spend it on well … lush stuff.  This includes a huge array of foods and services.

Today I took my balance ‘through zero’.  If I were using Kiwi dollars I’d be in debt, but here in Golden Bay, I’m in ‘dedication’ and we’re encouraged to ‘go through zero’ as often as possible.  It totally changes the approach to debt.  Here the community trust that members will continue to trade and move from ‘dedication’ to ‘appreciation’ occasionally.  For me it’s quite easy to earn more HANDS – I can sell stuff at markets, or offer more courses about stuff I’m experienced at – such as my Positive Writing courses (which people pay for using half kiwi dollars and half HANDS) – so I didn’t mind going into ‘dedication’.

Whew! What a relief to have that significant job taken care of!

Viva the HANDS revolution!
