Christchurch Mayor Urges Residents To Catch Inspiring Paralympics (NZ)

Submitted by on January 27, 2011 – 12:08 pm

Marcel Hug, Switzerland

Christchurch Mayor, Bob Parker, is calling on residents not to miss out on the courageous and inspiring displays of the spirit at the IPC Athletics World
Championship being held at the QEII Park.

“Come enjoy the games and be inspired by these extraordinary athletes who offer so much as models of hope and determination,” says Mr Parker.

He also called on residents to show their community spirit in supporting the paralympic athletes who had made the city their home for the past five days.

“This is a signature international event and Christchurch is fortunate to host, especially since it is the first time it has been out of Europe,” says Mr Parker. He urged residents to take advantage of the final few days of the event.

The Council put in a 400 metre, eight lane warm-up track for the athletes as part of the preparations for hosting the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championship

The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships runs until Sunday 30 January.

* Twenty five (25) new world records have been set since the games started on Friday.

* The “fastest man without legs” Oscar Pistorius, will run in the final of the 100m Wednesday at 4.50pm and the 400m at 12.05pm on Saturday. Pistorius has an opportunity to qualify for the able-bodied Olympics if he posts a qualifying time on Saturday.
