The Habits of Happiness – Are They Learnable?

Submitted by on February 14, 2011 – 10:48 am

Research from the field of positive psychology is now showing that happiness, and its extended family, for example, joy, calm, pride, hope and love do not appear randomly in individuals. There are certain characteristic ways of thinking and being that are typical of ‘ happy’ people. It is these skills
which ‘ pre-seed’ happiness. The research is also showing that we can successfully learn these skills and apply them to our lives. Conversely, the thinking style ‘symptomatic’ of unhappiness can also be unlearnt.

Ali Scott, an NLP Coach and Trainer, has designed a 6-session course in Christchurch, which combines the research from positive psychology and the tool and techniques of NLP.

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming studies success, because success, even when it appears ‘ magical,’ has a discernible structure, which can be copied or modeled.  It began in California in the 1970’ s with a study of 3 highly successful psychotherapists, Virginnia Satir, Fritz Pearls and Milton Erickson. This initial modeling project provided a wealth of detailed information about human thought and behaviour and the processes involved in their healing and development. It is these processes, which have become the tools and techniques of NLP and which can create simple and yet powerful changes in people’ s lives. A fast-growing solution-orientated branch of psychology, NLP enables individuals to overcome stress patterns, as well as issues such as low motivation, depression, anxiety, poor sleep, emotional eating, lack of self confidence and phobias.
