365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – 297 – Gratitude at Waikoropupu

Submitted by on February 18, 2011 – 8:49 pm 4 Comments

Whilst the world of Happyzine buzzes quietly away in cyberspace, some days I go work at Waikoropupu Springs.  You’ve got to go there.  If you’ve been there before, go again, it’s easy to forget how amazing that place feels.  These waters contain the clearest water in the world (apart from the water beneath the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica) and are truly magical to be near.  I love heading out there to patrol the area making sure people aren’t touching the water (DoC (Department of Conservation) are protecting it from Didymo right now).  It’s got this feel to it – the whole place is alive, pulsating with personality and movement.  Some times I come across people standing quietly near the water, their lips moving in some form of prayer and I give them a wide birth, hoping I didn’t interrupt.  Waikoropupu has long attracted people who need a little help.  It’s been a ceremonial site for generations.  People arrive and marvel at water that has sixty to seventy meters of clarity, and a kaleidoscope of blues and greens, the freshness in the air, and the peace.

Today I bumped into a man and his wife on the track.  They were fairy typical of the older, retired visitors I see out there, but there one difference – this man had red rimmed eyes.  He was over come with gratitude.  He thought the place was stunning.  He couldn’t understand how such a beautiful place could exist, and be open to anyone to visit, for free.   His wife felt the same.  They were deeply grateful to DoC for maintaining it and making it available to anybody.  I was touched by their open heartedness.  It isn’t often I see people from my parent’s generation, neatly dressed, conservative looking people, expressing such emotion.  That was my beautiful moment for today.

  • I have been a regular visitor to Te Waikoropupu Springs ever since moving to this area in 2003. I was so touched by its beauty and its powerful healing energy I created a photography exhibition in 2004 called “Beneath the Surface” featuring photographs taken from the viewing platform. You can see these on my website http://www.photoartist.co.nz or by visiting my facebook page.

I will never go to Golden Bay without visiting the springs and I encourage others to do so as well.

Hi Basil, thanks for your comment. I headed to your facebook page but couldn’t get into your images. I think I’ll invite you to become my friend, and then perhaps you could point me in the right direction?

  • I forgot to add: When you get to my facebook page go to image: Pupu Paint #44. In it you will see Huriawa, the resident Taniwha, looking up and giving me permission to take pictures of her and her children.
