365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – 338 – An Ode to the Onekaka Hall

Submitted by on April 1, 2011 – 7:35 pm

The old Onekaka Hall was built 100 years ago for the New Zealand Education Board.  Today it stands, small, cosy and lovingly maintained.  Also, though I write this with mild levels of disbelief, it can officially hold fifty people. I’ve never been a good judge of space and how many people fit into it, so I’ll move on from that particular factoid.

Today I spent some time at the community hall (which you can apparently hire for ten dollars) for our lovely friend Maya’s three year old birthday.  Mothers clucked over children who frolicked raucously, and one lone man retreated to the kitchen where he cooked the fish he’d caught, and did all the cleaning.

My son, being a chip off the old block (haven’t used that cliche before and I’m liking it) spent some quality time on the nearby stage.  It’s a great stage – high, sturdy, wooden, includes easily accessible power-points – and it has many bits that a young boy can jump down from.

Naturally I was summoned to the stage to watch Kahu and before long I found myself sitting and gazing up at my most favorite hills on the entire planet – the Kahurangi National Park.  It was nice being closer to them.  Onekaka – home of the world famous Mussel Inn – is a lush place.  It’s very bush clad, sort of misty and green.  It has a feel to it that place, it’s the feeling of the life, of water, of rawness, of the land at her best, in her most natural state.  If you were the fairy believing type, you’d swear they lived there.  It was grounding and refreshing to be back at Onekaka, after spending a good month in and around Golden Bay’s vague attempts at the suburbs – Takaka.

It’s a grand thing to make a break from the power-lines and the concrete and the straight lines and head for nature.  Replenishes the heart.  Nourishes the cells.  Reminds a girl of what really is.
