Conscious Consumers Café Project Coming to Auckland.
The Conscious Consumers cafe project, a non-profit venture successfully operating in Wellington for the past year, is coming to Auckland in June. Aucklanders who love their coffee and want to support sustainable business should keep an eye out for Conscious Consumer ‘badges’ that will be appearing in café windows from June onwards. Interested Auckland cafes and supporting businesses are encouraged to join up online before the end of May to make sure they are part of the official launch.
Conscious Consumers café project works a bit like Scouts or Brownies, with cafes awarded badges for nine specific environmental and socially responsible business practices, such as using fair-trade coffee, organic and seasonal produce, free-range eggs, or composting food scraps. Badges are displayed in-store to showcase and communicate the cafe’s credentials to consumers in smart and engaging ways. To be awarded a badge, a cafe must meet a ‘reasonableness’ test which is audited annually. A minimum of four of the nine badges are required by a café to be eligible to join Conscious Consumers.
Conscious Consumers makes it easier for cafés to improve their practices by linking them with suppliers of sustainable goods and services via the website’s business directory. Social media is used to engage with consumers and to keep members updated on what cafes are up to and how to get involved with promotional events such as the recent ‘carrotmob’ that was held at Memphis Belle Coffee House in Wellington on April 9 2011, raising $3000 towards improving the café’s energy efficiency (…a carrotWHAT?? Read about this reverse-boycott consumer tactic in a 4 April NZ Business Herald article…).

Interested Auckland cafes and suppliers are encouraged to register online before end of May so not to miss out on being part of the official launch.
