ReGeneration: Queer and Creative – By Lani Evans
There are a bunch of awesome people all around the country who are trying to shift the way we’re thinking, doing and being, and this week I had the privilege of meeting up with one of the best of them. Sam Orchard is in the top ten list of most wonderful people I’ve ever met and he’s focused all of his considerable energy on using creativity to make change.
Sam describes himself as “just your regular ol’ transman comic artist”, but his work is anything but regular. He produces beautiful, simple stuff, much of which appears on a weekly blog. Sam’s work is a sense-making process, a way of deconstructing and sharing his own experiences, but it’s also about making the radness of the queer community more visible.
Sam depicts everyday life in the queer community – encompassing all the happiness, beauty, normality and love, as well as the tricky stuff around difference and discrimination and he does it with large helpings of wit and quirk.
You can take a peek at some of Sam’s most recent work on his blog here… http://roostertails.wordpress.com or check out the 90-second doco here… http://www.regeneration.org.nz/in_your_region/auckland
