Green Profile Series: WWF

Submitted by on July 2, 2011 – 4:15 pm

1. What’s the purpose of WWF?

WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future where people live in harmony with nature

2. What is WWF’s background, what inspired it’s beginning and how has it grown over time?

In 1961 WWF was founded in response to concerns about the decline in species such as the rhino and the tiger. Hundreds of thousands of people became part of the WWF family and donated funds to the cause. Today, WWF has five million supporters around the world who care about this planet and the future of the people and wildlife that live on it.

3. Can you describe some exciting change WWF has helped facilitate, or is currently working on?

WWF was instrumental in the 1982 moratorium on commercial whaling.

WWF is a world leader in efforts to stop the destruction of the marine environment due to overfishing and damaging fishing practices such as bottom trawling and bycatch.

In the Oceania region – covering New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific islands – WWF has three programmes for delivering sustainable fisheries:

• To ensure that Oceanic fisheries that are or would like to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council practice the highest standard of sustainable fisheries management.

• To raise seafood consumers’ and retailers’ awareness of the origins of fish products, whether they have been fished sustainably and any associated conservation issues.

• To promote the adoption of ecosystem-based fisheries management.

4. What are the future aspirations of WWF?

We are working to build a future where people live in harmony with nature. One of the biggest challenges facing the planet is climate change, therefore we are committed to tackling global greenhouse gas emissions and preventing runaway climate change.

5. Would you like to share anything else about WWF?

WWF is celebrating 50 years of achievements: http://wwf.panda.org/who_we_are/history/50_years_of_achievements/
